Instruments • Re: U-He Repro 5 Vs Softube Model 80 - Blind Test Comparisons + Settings to Match Them

Hello,

I have already a lot of softsynths by major vendors like U-He, Arturia, NI, KORG, GForce, Synapse, Softube etc. but always curious and greedy about new releases, which are said to sound better than the existing emulations. So I have both Repro and Prophet 5 V, but after I bought the really great sounding Model 84, I was curious also about Model 80. Around last Christmas (oh, yeah!) I received a very tempting offer from Softube and took a look at all the comparisons out there between the Model 80 and the excellent Repro 5, which up to that moment I was considering enough as a Prophet emulation. The opinions that M80 sounds a tad better than Repro 5 (although maybe not closer to the original as per Urs' opinion in this thread) definitely ignited my GAS greediness, but the relatively small amount of presets on M80, most of which - boring, was a stopper. I decided then to do a little test myself and that's how I came to the video below.

It is a brief comparison between Model 80 and Repro 5, where I took one nice Repro patch and re-created it as close as possible on Model 80. The interesting thing here is that they sound quite close only, when I turn off the second oscillator on Model 80. If I set the second oscillator on Model 80 to a sawtooth wave though, just as it is on Repro, which is shown on the video from 0:35, that lead starts sounding more detuned and not so sharp and focused as on Repro. On the other hand with the second oscillator turned off on Model 80, as shown starting from 0:18, the sound is just a tad not so rich as on Repro. Seems like the detuning between the two oscillators on Model 80 is far bigger, where on Repro it is more subtle and that happens with Detune turned off completely on Model 80, while on Repro it is set at 25% and still it is far more obvious on Model 80. Maybe I am missing something here, so would be glad to hear more opinions, but this observation seems in line with what Urs said on page 2 of this thread about Model 80: "Theirs is way to detuned and adds way too much distortion and noise". As I am not familiar with all details about both synths, I might be missing some important setting, which might bring them even closer, so if anyone have any idea, I would be curious to try to get the balance even more right between the two. The screenshots on the video show the actual settings used.

P.S. Bottom line: previous time i passed on the M80, but the other day Softube sent me an even better offer for it and now I didn't resist, so already own both Model 80 and Repro, but still curious to understand which horse for which course to use.

P.P.S. Initially I started the comparison by using plugmon's recreation of some M80 patches for Repro 5, but with all my respect to his work, I found some of them not sounding so close to each other, that's why I tried to do my own match.
