But things do change, I read nothing but "crazy value for money" on eg Harley Benton (sold by thomannmusic.com) guitars.

Best advice I can give is to investigate the return policy. Questions asked? Who pays shipment? If that looks good then take the gamble. All the wet-behind-the-ears kids buy online, and they are having a party with it.
