There was some great satire in the X Files. The mythology seasonal cliffhangers were a pain, and everyone I knew would chafe all summer waiting for the next season.
It was a phenomenon of the 90's, for sure. I think it won a number of Emmys. It went south with the production.
One thing made me laugh. The actor, Roy Thinnes, was a human who'd copped onto an alien invasion in the 60's show 'The Invaders.' Watched it all the time, had the model of the spaceship. Anyway, he shows up as a shapeshifting alien. A deliberate juxtaposition, lol.
